Documentation

The Volkswagen Samba, known in the United States as Sunroof deluxe, was the most luxurious version of the Volkswagen Type 2 T1 (Transporter). The Samba was put into production in 1951.

Originally, Volkswagen vans were classified according to the number of windows they had. The model at the time had 23 windows. To distinguish between the regular 23-ramer and the luxury version, the name Samba was coined.

The Samba had two turning doors on the side instead of a sliding door. In addition, the Sambas had a fabric sunroof that could be pushed open and in the sides of the roof there were panoramic windows. Volkswagen advertised at the time by suggesting that the Samba could be used for tourist trips through the Alps. The Sambas became popular as a hippie bus in the 1960s.

The Samba was sprayed in two colors as standard. Most of the time, the upper part was white and the lower part was colored. The colored parts were separated by an ornamental strip. Furthermore, the bus had a so-called “cap”. This means that the roof ran a bit past the windshield. The windows had chrome-plated frames and the car had a more extensive dashboard than the regular T1. This model is very special, it has been shortened and has a lowered roof.
