Documentation

The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia is a car sold between 1955 and 1974 by Volkswagen as a 2 + 2 coupe or convertible. With the combination of the chassis and mechanics of the Type 1 (Beetle), styling by Luigi Segre of the Italian Carrozzeria Ghia and hand-built bodywork by the German coach builder Karmann.

More than 445,000 Karmann Ghias were produced in Germany – with the exception of the Type 34 variant. Karmann Brazil produced 41,600 cars for the South American market between 1962 and 1975.

The 1967 Type 14 Karmann Ghia convertible gained prominence on American television as the car driven by CONTROL Agent 86 Maxwell Smart in the opening credits of the third and fourth seasons of Get Smart. In 1970 Volkswagen introduced larger rear lights with integrated reversing lights and larger wrap-around turn signals. In 1973, the US model was modified with energy-absorbing bumpers, on behalf of the National Highway Traffic Safety.
At the end of 1974 the car was replaced by the Porsche 914 and the Golf Rabbit based on the famous Scirocco.
