Documentation

In 1988, Ducati had to build 200 units of the 'Ducati 851' as homologation, in order to participate in the 'WSB' championship. Three versions of the 'Ducati 851' are available: 'Lucchinelli Replica', '851 Superbikes' and '851 Strada'. The '851 Strada' also has 851 cc and is almost the same block as the '851 Superbike', more calculated for the public road. In 1989 there are again three street models of the 'Ducati 851' available. The wheels are white colored 17″ 'Brembo' copies. The front fork is a 'Marzocchi M1R' upside-down and the rear is a 'Marzocchi Supermono' shock absorber. The front brake discs come from 'Brembo' and measure 320 mm, equipped with four-piston calipers. The handling of the 1989 model has been greatly improved due to the 17″ wheels (which replace the 16″ 'Marvic' of the 1988 'Strada') and the steeper head tube angle. The '851 Strada' was fitted with a duo seat in 1990, with the consequence that the subframe is heavier. Ducati has stunned the motorcycle world within two years, to embarrass the considered superior Japanese motorcycle industry with a two-cylinder. The best built factory '888' racer is the machine that American Doug drives around Poland. His unparalleled riding style leads to 17 victories, resulting in the 1991 World Championship in the 'Superbikes'. (Total production in 1990: 1,366 pieces). The liquid-cooled engine has a capacity of 851 CC. Furthermore, the four-stroke V-Twin Cylinder DOHC Desmodronic engine is equipped with four valves per cylinder. The power of 105 HP (77 kW) is delivered at 9,000 rpm. The torque is set at 71.2 Nm at 7,250 rpm. The engine had a dry weight of 190 Kg and (before that time) already achieved a top speed of approximately 240.9 Km/hr. The transmission takes place via a 6-speed gearbox that drives the rear wheel via a chain. The rest of the bike is equipped with a Showa Upside-Down fork and a double disc brake at the front and a single disc brake at the rear. This motorcycle has mostly been in a collection, so it has not been used much. It doesn't roll very smoothly at the moment, but that is probably due to the long standing still, which means that the braking system at the front has to be reactivated and bled. We also found out that the fuel pump (in this type is still in the fuel tank) has been out of fuel for some time, causing it to break. This has since been replaced by a "new" second-hand fuel pump, whereby all fuel lines in the tank have been replaced immediately. Furthermore, the engine is almost still in the original version as it was delivered at the time. A previous owner only replaced the standard exhausts with more aesthetic Carbon ones. In addition to the standard documents, various tests from the regular Motor weekly magazines are also included. The Ducati 851 type should actually be in everyone's collection and has proven to be an icon in the motorcycle world. In fact, almost out of nowhere, Ducati came up with a development lead that you really shouldn't miss. Especially the second type S3 with the improved upside-down front fork has wonderful driving characteristics that even now earns respect on the track. Runs, but cannot be started due to belts.
