On June 12, 1954, Carl Borgward personally presents his most successful model: the new Hansa 1500, which we know today as Isabella. There are various stories about the origin of that name. Of course, nothing was allowed to leak to the press at the time of the development of the new Hansa 1500, so a pseudonym for the project was sought. When asked, Carl Borgward seems to have said: “I don't care what name you use, for all I care you put on her Isabella.” And so it happened, and when the car was presented, the press often kept the name Isabella in its articles about the newcomer.
The factory then received many requests to keep this name instead of the boring Hansa 1500. In August 1954 it was indeed decided to do so. According to another, more flattering story, the car was named after Carl Borgward's wife, Elisabeth; Isabella would be the Spanish translation of her name. The 4.40 meter long Isabella is equipped with a 1,493 cc four-cylinder engine that produces 60 hp, with which a top speed of 135 km/h can be reached.
Carrera Panamericana
The Isabella comes at just the right time, namely at the height of the so-called 'Wirtschaftswunder'. More than 11,000 were sold in the first six months, and 25,000 have already left the factory in Bremen a year after the introduction. In the touring car class up to 1,600 cc, driver Adolf Brudes and his Isabella won the infamous Carrera Panamericana (a street race over 3,070 km) in 1954 with an average speed of 113 km/h.
